POV-NBBJ-workshop-08112015_6436The Port of Vancouver USA Board of Commissioners, staff and members of the public learned more about four concepts for the port’s waterfront development during an Aug. 11 workshop.

Port master planning consultant NBBJ presented an overarching plan for the entire waterfront, which could include a marketplace, mixed-use office building, hotel, open spaces, a plaza or pier, and a multi-use shared pathway that could connect to the city of Vancouver’s Renaissance Trail.

Future phases of the port’s development could include additional office space, retail, restaurants and residential.

NBBJ walked workshop attendees through this overarching plan and discussed in further detail four specific concepts, reviewing particulars like placement and size of buildings, types of uses and ideas for public spaces.

NBBJ was also there to listen as port commissioners and others in the audience shared their thoughts about what should be built on the port’s historic property at Terminal 1.

Commissioner Jerry Oliver shared his view that the hotel should be built “as close to the waterfront as possible,” and stressed that “affordable, accessible parking” should be a priority as the port and NBBJ continue planning efforts.

Commissioner Wolfe expressed his hopes for an open concept. “I envisioned Columbia Way being almost as wide open as what you’ve got on the waterfront (boulevard),” he said. He also expressed interest in the idea of a marina, a detail included in concept four.

Commissioner Baker shared her desire to see the multi-use path built along the water. She also wanted to make sure the hotel was appropriately placed and that public spaces were accessible.

Several members of the audience shared their thoughts, which included connections to multiple modes of transportation, affordable housing, flexible parking and the inclusion of a performing arts center.

The commission will take time to consider concepts and feedback while NBBJ continues to refine the waterfront master plan. NBBJ is expected to return to the board in September for more discussion and a possible commission vote on a preferred alternative.
