Open House-4An engaged crowd of about 125 people attended a July 15 waterfront project open house at the Terminal 1 amphitheater to learn more about the Port of Vancouver USA’s plans to develop 10 acres of prime property on the Columbia River. Although the windy evening proved challenging for an outdoor event, it was important for attendees to feel and experience the site with its challenges, opportunities and scenic beauty.

Ages 1 to 101 were present at the event, which featured 20 display boards depicting the site’s history, existing conditions, allowable building heights, parking options, and existing trails and entrances. At the end of the display were three concepts for the site, developed by master planning consultant NBBJ of Seattle. NBBJ and port staff walked attendees through the concepts and then asked participants to share their comments and feedback.

Participants were also offered tours of the site that took them past the Renaissance Trail, Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay, The Quay Restaurant, docks and piers, amphitheater and the Columbia Shores Business Center.

Next steps for the port’s development include presenting the three site concepts to the Board of Commissioners at its regularly scheduled Aug. 11 meeting. The commission is expected to vote on a preferred concept at that meeting to keep the project moving forward.
