LongshoreLoading 1940s B13gcv001Local historian Pat Jollota’s new book, Vanishing Vancouver, takes a look at our historic city, where the only thing that doesn’t seem to change is its hard-working and resilient citizens.

The 127-page book is chock-full of interesting information and photos illustrating the history of America’s Vancouver, including chapters on the Hudson’s Bay Company, downtown, uptown and even the Port of Vancouver USA!

In the beginning pages, Jollota mentions her and her husband’s first impressions of Vancouver when they first arrived in 1982.

“How quickly we were welcomed into Vancouver’s life!” she said. “This town has embraced and supported me through sad times and joy. Thank you, Vancouver. This book is offered to the people of this community.”

In her segment about the Port of Vancouver, Jollota provides a short history and photos of industry and activity on Vancouver’s waterfront. From wood products to grain and ship building to sternwheelers, she deftly illustrates the port’s historic role as a center for jobs and trade.

The Port of Vancouver is honored to have been a part of this community for more than 100 years, and to have such a prominent part in Jollota’s book. Staff members are passing the book around, and we highly recommend it for anyone wishing to learn more about Vancouver’s rich history!
