VANCOUVER, Wash. – Local restauranteur Mark Matthias has signed an agreement with the Port of Vancouver USA to open a new restaurant at the port’s Terminal 1 waterfront redevelopment.

Matthias, who owns Beaches Restaurant & Bar on the Columbia River and at the Portland International Airport, plans to open WareHouse ‘23 by July 1, 2016. The restaurant will feature seasonal Northwest cuisine, 20 local small brews on tap, regional wines and handcrafted cocktails.

“The WareHouse will be a warm, social environment offering a wide variety of food and drink to encourage sharing, sampling and sipping,” said Matthias.

“Our team of chefs has been working on a unique concept with seasonally imaginative plates designed for sharing with friends,” he continued. “We’re excited to bring a new and different eating experience to Vancouver.”

“A unique and locally owned restaurant is a welcome addition to Terminal 1 and our waterfront redevelopment,” said port Director of Economic Development Katy Brooks. “WareHouse ‘23 will provide the first taste of the culture and flavor of what Terminal 1 will become in its new life as a community gathering space.”

WareHouse ’23 will also offer catering and event space in the former Red Lion ballroom adjacent to the restaurant. Matthias plans to open the ballroom, which can handle groups of up to 350 people, by June 1. This event space has the same incredible views of the Columbia River as the restaurant and opens to an outside viewing deck.

The port’s agreement with Matthias is short-term, with the expectation of relocating WareHouse ’23 within the waterfront development as it takes shape.

“We are especially pleased that Mark is vested in the vision of the future Terminal 1 as a regional attraction and the go-to place to eat, play, work and live,” said Brooks.

Matthias has already begun remodeling the restaurant to reflect a more rustic ’warehouse’ feel. He is also repurposing much of the existing wood and furnishings to preserve some of the site’s history.

About Terminal 1
The Port of Vancouver USA is redeveloping a 10-acre site it owns on the Columbia River. Known as Terminal 1, the site is the port’s birthplace and home to its first warehouse, built in the 1920s through a partnership with the City of Vancouver. When fully developed, Terminal 1 could feature a public marketplace, new hotel, retail and commercial office space, and visitor amenities.
