June18WorkshopVANCOUVER, Wash. – Port of Vancouver USA consultant NBBJ will present four waterfront design concepts during a Board of Commissioners workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

What:      Commission workshop for the Port of Vancouver’s waterfront project
When:     Noon on Tuesday, Aug. 11
Where:    Port administrative office, 3103 Northwest Lower River Road, Vancouver

This commission workshop is open to the public. It will be broadcast live and recorded on www.cvtv.org.

The port is revitalizing its birthplace on the Columbia River. Known as Terminal 1, the property is currently home to the Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay, The Quay Restaurant, 300 sq. ft. of high docks and piers, a public amphitheater, a low dock and the Columbia Shores Business Center.

Through input received from the port commission, the public and stakeholders, and port and city staff, NBBJ originally created three concepts for the port’s 10 acre development at Terminal 1. A fourth concept, “Dock Restoration,” emerged later, and will be presented at the Aug. 11 workshop.

  • Concept 1, or “Baseline,” retains the current street grid and block configuration, restores the Terminal 1 building to its original length, replaces the public amphitheater with a terraced lawn and creates new open spaces along the high piers.
  • Concept 2, or “Grid Shift,” slightly modifies the street grid and block configuration and creates “woonerf” plaza spaces designed to accommodate pedestrians and vehicles. It also removes the current amphitheater, replacing it with a new cove, and returns Terminal 1 to its original size.
  • Concept 3, or “Daniels Way,” extends Daniels Way to the site through a pedestrian underpass and relocates the Terminal 1 building. It also removes the current amphitheater, replacing it with a terraced shoreline, and adds a wooden pier for river views.
  • Concept 4, or “Dock Restoration,” stabilizes and restores the existing dock and pilings. It also disassembles and reconstructs Terminal 1 at the current amphitheater location. A new hotel complements the Terminal 1 building marketplace.

The commissioners will review and discuss each concept during the workshop Tuesday. They’re expected to vote on a preferred alternative in September.

The port expects to present a master planning report this fall and complete the master planning process by the end of the year.
