VANCOUVER, Wash. – The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) has recognized the Port of Vancouver USA with four 2018 Communications Competition awards for exemplary work in multimedia, periodicals and community awareness.

The port earned an Award of Excellence for its 2017 Virtual Holiday Card; Awards of Distinction for its Community Report and “Connecting with the Community” social media campaign, and; an Award of Merit for its Jobs & Economic Impact video.

“Much of the port’s work happens behind the scenes in industrial centers and marine terminals – areas people usually don’t see unless they happen to work there,” said port CEO Julianna Marler. “This can make it challenging to connect with our community in a meaningful way, but our staff continues to do great work, using a variety of tools to reach community members where they are and making it interesting and engaging.”

Entries in the AAPA Communications Awards Program are judged by an independent panel of experienced communications professionals on situation analysis and research; identification of audience, goals, objectives, strategies and tactics; quality/clarity of content and style; skillful use of copy, photography, design, layout and graphics; and evaluation methods used to determine communication success.

The judges’ comments reflected enjoyment and appreciation for the port’s creative and effective programs.

The social media campaign was a “fun entry,” said judge Lauren Lawson-Zilai, who also commented that the “look and feel of the (Jobs & Economic Impact) video was excellent.”

“Very nicely prepared newsletter,” said judge Bonnie Piper of the port’s biannual Community Report. “The news-worthiness is very timely and up to date which makes for a good informative read!”

“This Community Report is an excellent tool to keep your intended audience informed,” said judge Maggie Kasperski. “I don’t know how else you could reach the community in such a successful way, so mailing this out to all area residents to keep them informed is a great idea.”

AAPA’s annual Communications Awards Program has recognized excellence in port communications since 1966, with 15 entry classifications ranging from education programs and advertisements to videos and social media.
