Vancouver Landing, Terminal 1’s community gathering destination, earns recognition from the American Society of Landscape Architects

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Vancouver Landing, the Port of Vancouver USA’s new public access point on the Columbia River, has earned an Award of Merit from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).

Concrete amphitheater with concrete steps sits along river's edge with tall buildings under construction in the background.

The award was given to GreenWorks PC, the landscape architecture firm contracted by the port to reimagine the old, unused concrete amphitheater at its Terminal 1 location on the Vancouver Waterfront.

The boardwalk that weaves among Rotary Club elements, a concrete river map and interpretive signage against the backdrop of sweeping river views officially opened last spring and is the first completed public project in the port’s multi-year Terminal 1 redevelopment effort. The ASLA award submission states:

As a catalyst project, the Vancouver Landing Project set the stage for future work by celebrating the site’s commercial and industrial history while greening and reimaging an existing derelict amphitheater, restoring the shoreline, and making vital connections to the adjacent waterfront, new development and amenities, the existing Renaissance Trail to the east, and downtown Vancouver, bringing continued economic vitality to the area.

Wooden boardwalk winds around the dock at the Rivers edge. Several planting spaces of varying sizes and shapes house plants, shrubs and small trees.

Vancouver Landing 2023

“We’re incredibly proud that Vancouver Landing has won an award for how it’s inspiring the community to enjoy the Columbia River waterfront right here at Terminal 1,” said Julianna Marler, port CEO. “Our goal is to continue improving this destination where people can enjoy the incredible river views while engaging with the region’s history and where they can easily access the trails, restaurants, hotels and retail the area has to offer. We’re grateful to GreenWorks PC for its design work of Vancouver Landing that matches our ambitious goal.”

ASLA was founded in 1899, and the Washington State Chapter of the ASLA issued its 2023 awards in April.
